In the event of a product defect during the warranty period, take the product and the RadioShack sales receipt as proof of purchase date to any RadioShack store. RadioShack will, at its option, unless otherwise provided by law: (a) correct the de- fect by product repair without charge for parts and labor; (b) replace the product with one of the same or similar design; or (c) refund the purchase price. All re- placed parts and products, and products on which a refund is made, become the property of RadioShack. New or reconditioned parts and products may be used in the performance of warranty service. Repaired or replaced parts and products are warranted for the remainder of the original warranty period. You will be charged for repair or replacement of the product made after the expiration of the warranty pe- riod.

FEATURES

Your RadioShack Two-Way Family Radio is a lightweight, palm-sized radio that you can carry almost anywhere. Use it at shopping malls, amusement parks, or sports events to contact family and friends, or in a neighborhood watch for vital communications.

Your radio has 14 channels and 38 different qui- et codes. If someone else is using the channel you selected and you do not want to hear that person, select another channel or use the quiet feature (see ???Using the Quiet Feature??? on Page 6). You can talk with other FRS radio users whose radios are tuned to the same channel and quiet code as yours.

Your radio has auto-squelch, which means you will not hear anything on a channel unless someone is transmitting nearby on the same channel. You can turn off auto-squelch to hear weaker, distant transmissions (see Pages 4 and 5).

Also, the radio has a channel and quiet code lock pin in the battery compartment. (See illus- tration on facing page.) Removing the pin locks the channel and quiet code settings to avoid ac- cidentally changing the settings.

The supplied hand strap and belt clip let you carry your radio almost anywhere.

FCC INFORMATION

Important: Do not open your radio to make any inter- nal adjustments. Your radio is set up to transmit a reg- ulated signal on an assigned frequency. It is against the law to alter or adjust the settings inside the radio to exceed those limitations. Any adjustments to your radio must be made by a qualified technician using the proper test equipment. To be safe and sure:

???Never open your radio???s case.

???Never change or replace anything in your radio except the batteries.

Your radio might cause TV or radio interference even when it is operating properly. To determine whether your radio is causing the interference, turn it off. If the interference goes away, your radio is causing it. Try to eliminate the interference by:

???moving your radio away from the receiver

???calling your local RadioShack store for help

If you cannot eliminate the interference, the FCC re- quires that you stop using the radio.

CARING FOR YOUR RADIO

To enjoy your radio for a long time:

Modifying or tampering with the radio???s internal com- ponents can cause a malfunction and might invalidate the radio???s warranty and void your FCC authorization to operate it. If your radio is not performing as it should, take it to your local RadioShack store for as- sistance.

USING THE QUIET FEATURE

The quiet feature lets you talk and listen to peo- ple who are using other radios set to the same channel and quiet code as your radio. This is like having a sub-channel within a channel, giv- ing you greater communication flexibility.

When you set a quiet code (there are 38 to choose from) and turn on this feature, the radio transmits a tone with your transmission. This tone is too low for you to hear, but other radios can detect it. This prevents radios which are not set to the same channel and quiet code from in- terfering with your transmissions or reception.

Follow these steps to set a quiet code.

1.Repeatedly press MODE until QUIET and the previously set quiet code appear and flash.

2.Rotate CHANNEL/QUIET/VOLUME clock- wise or counterclockwise until you see the code number (1???38) you want to use.

QUIET flashes for 5 seconds after you stop rotating CHANNEL/QUIET/VOLUME, then the selected channel number reappears.

OPERATION

INSTALLING BATTERIES

Your radio uses an optional Ni-MH recharge- able battery pack (RSU No. 12016481, avail- able through your local RadioShack store) or three alkaline AA batteries (not supplied) for power.

Cautions:

???Use only fresh batteries of the required size and recommended type.

???Do not mix old and new batteries, different types of batteries (standard, alkaline, or rechargeable), or rechargeable batteries of different capacities.

Note: You need an optional desktop charger (Cat. No. 21-1830), to charge the battery pack before you can use it. Follow the directions sup- plied with the optional desktop charger to charge the battery pack.

Be sure the radio is off, then remove the belt clip. Use a coin or a screwdriver to loosen the screw on the battery compartment cover, then slide the cover down and off and install the bat- tery pack or batteries as shown.

Note: If you will not be using the radio for sever- al months, remove the batteries.

USING THE RADIO

To hear everything on a channel, including weak transmissions and radios set to a different quiet code, hold down MON (monitor). RX appears. Release MON to turn auto-squelch back on.

To talk, hold down PTT (push to talk) and speak into the micro- phone. TX appears. When you finish speaking, release PTT. TX disappears.

Display

As you use the radio, the battery icon???s elements on the display dis- appear to show how much power remains. When only one element remains, recharge the battery pack or replace the batteries.

Rotate to adjust the voice volume, channel, quiet code, and ringer volume.

For more convenient listening, connect an optional speaker/ microphone with a 3/32-inch mini plug and a 1/8-inch plug to the EAR/MIC jacks (or an ear- phone with a 1/8-inch plug to the EAR jack).

Microphone

Repeatedly press MODE to switch between channel, quiet, volume and intelligent call ringer modes. See ???Using the Quiet Feature??? on Page 6.

You can cause a paging tone to sound on all radios tuned to the same channel (and quiet code, if used). To send a page, hold down CALL for up to 5 seconds. TX appears.

When you press CALL, the radio sends a signal that automatically turns up the volume on another Cat. No. 21-1810 Two-Way Family Radio (or other radio that has this feature). This ???Intelligent Call Ringer??? allows the party on the other end to hear the call tone, even if their radio???s volume

To turn the radio on or off, hold down POWER for about 1 second.

You can lock the radio???s volume at any time by holding down MODE for 2 seconds. appears, and you cannot use

CHANNEL/QUIET/VOLUME to adjust the volume. Hold down MODE again for 2 seconds to unlock the volume. disap- pears.

The backlight turns on for 10 seconds whenever you press MODE, CALL, or POWER, or rotate
