Removing the Audio Board
1.Follow the procedures in Before Working Inside Your Computer.
2.Remove the battery.
3.Remove the base cover.
4.Remove the hard drive assembly.
5.Remove the optical drive.
6.Remove the keyboard.
7.Remove the palm rest.
8.Remove the screw that secures the audio board to the palm rest.
9. Open the clip that secures the audio board cable to its connector on the audio board.
10.Disconnect the audio board cable from its connector on the audio board.
11. Lift the audio board up and away from the computer.
Replacing the Audio Board
To replace the audio board, perform the above steps in reverse order.

Removing the Base Cover

4. Lift up the base cover and remove it from the computer.

Removing the Battery

2.Flip the computer over.
3.Slide the battery release latch to the unlock position.
4. Slide the other battery release latch to the unlock position.
5. Slide the battery and remove it from the computer.

Overview
Use System Setup as follows:
???To change the system configuration information after you add, change, or remove any hardware in your computer
???To set or change a
???To read the current amount of memory or set the type of hard drive installed
Before you use System Setup, it is recommended that you write down the System Setup screen information for future reference.
CAUTION: Unless you are an expert computer user, do not change the settings for this program. Certain changes can cause your computer to work incorrectly.
Entering System Setup
1.Turn on (or restart) your computer.
2.When the blue DELL??? logo is displayed, you must watch for the F2 prompt to appear.
3.Once this F2 prompt appears, press <F2> immediately.
NOTE: The F2 prompt indicates that the keyboard has initialized. This prompt can appear very quickly, so you must watch for it to display and then press <F2>. If you press <F2> before you are prompted, this keystroke will be lost.
4.If you wait too long and the operating system logo appears, continue to wait until you see the Microsoft?? Windows?? desktop. Then, shut down your computer and try again.
System Setup Screens
Menu ??? Appears on top of the System Setup window. This field provides a menu to access the System Setup options. Press < Left Arrow > and < Right Arrow > keys to navigate. As a Menu option is highlighted, the Options List lists the options that define the hardware installed on your computer.

Device Status Lights
Turns on when you turn on the computer and blinks when the computer is in a power management mode.
Turns on when the computer reads or writes data.

Battery Status Lights
If the computer is connected to an electrical outlet, the battery light operates as follows:
???Alternately blinking amber light and blue light ??? An unauthenticated or unsupported
???Alternately blinking amber light with steady blue light ??? Temporary battery failure with AC adapter present.
???Constantly blinking amber light ??? Fatal battery failure with AC adapter present.

Battery Charge and Health
To check the battery charge, press and release the status button on the battery charge gauge to illuminate the
To check battery health using the charge gauge, press and hold the status button on the battery charge gauge for at least 3 seconds. If no lights appear, the battery is in good condition and more than 80 percent of its original charge capacity remains. Each light represents incremental degradation. If five lights appear, less than 60 percent of the charge capacity remains, and you should consider replacing the battery.
Keyboard Status Lights
The green lights located above the keyboard indicate the following:
Turns on when the numeric keypad is enabled.
Turns on when the Caps Lock function is enabled.
Turns on when the Scroll Lock function is enabled.

4.Remove the wireless local area network (WLAN) card.

10. With the right side of the computer facing up, disconnect the display cable from its connector on the system board.

13. Remove the screws that secure the display assembly to the computer.
14. Lift the display assembly up and away from the computer.

4.Using a small plastic scribe, press in on the release latches and pry the keyboard to release it.
5. Lift the keyboard and turn it over.
6. Carefully open the clip to release the keyboard cable.
7. Disconnect the keyboard cable from its connector on the system board and remove the keyboard from the computer.

Removing the Palm Rest
1.Follow the procedures in Before Working Inside Your Computer.
2.Remove the battery.
3.Remove the base cover.
4.Remove the hard drive.
5.Remove the optical drive.
6.Remove the keyboard.
7.Remove the rubber feet at the bottom of the computer.
8. Remove the screws that secure the palm rest to the bottom of the computer.
9.Flip the computer over with the right side facing up.
10.Disconnect the speaker cable from its connector on the system board.
11. Open the clip that secures the fingerprint data cable to its connector on the system board.
12. Disconnect the fingerprint data cable from its connector on the system board.
13. Open the clip that secures the audio cable to its connector on the system board.
14. Disconnect the audio cable from its connector on the system board.
15. Open the clip that secures the touchpad data cable to its connector on the system board.
16. Disconnect the touchpad data cable from its connector on the system board.
17. Open the clip that secures the media button data cable to its connector on the system board.
18. Disconnect the media button data cable from its connector on the system board.
19. Remove the screws that secure the palm rest to the front of the computer.
20. Gently pry along the edges of the palm rest to release the palm rest.
21. Lift the palm rest up and away from the computer.
Replacing the Palm Rest

4.Disconnect the antenna cables from the WLAN card.
5. Remove the screw that secures the WLAN card to the system board.
6. Gently pull the WLAN card away from its connector on the system board and remove it from the computer.

Use the following safety guidelines to help protect your computer from potential damage and to help to ensure your personal safety. Unless otherwise noted, each procedure included in this document assumes that the following conditions exist:

CAUTION: Many repairs may only be done by a certified service technician. You should only perform troubleshooting and simple repairs as authorized in your product documentation, or as directed by the online or telephone service and support team. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not covered by your warranty. Read and follow the safety instructions that came with the product.
CAUTION: To avoid electrostatic discharge, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching an unpainted metal surface, such as a connector on the back of the computer.
CAUTION: Handle components and cards with care. Do not touch the components or contacts on a card. Hold a card by its edges or by its metal mounting bracket. Hold a component such as a processor by its edges, not by its pins.

To avoid damaging your computer, perform the following steps before you begin working inside the computer:
1.Ensure that your work surface is flat and clean to prevent the computer cover from being scratched.
2.Turn off your computer (see Turning Off Your Computer).
3.If the computer is connected to a docking device (docked) such as the optional Media Base or Battery Slice, undock it.
CAUTION: To disconnect a network cable, first unplug the cable from your computer and then unplug the cable from the network device.
4.Disconnect all network cables from the computer.
5.Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets.
6.Close the display and turn the computer
CAUTION: To avoid damaging the system board, you must remove the main battery before you service the computer.
7.Remove the main battery (see Battery).
8.Turn the computer
9.Open the display.
10.Press the power button to ground the system board.
CAUTION: To guard against electrical shock, always unplug your computer from the electrical outlet before opening the display.
CAUTION: Before touching anything inside your computer, ground yourself by touching an unpainted metal surface, such as the metal at the back of the computer. While you work, periodically touch an unpainted metal surface to dissipate static electricity, which could harm internal components.
11.Remove any installed ExpressCards or Smart Cards from the appropriate slots.
12.Remove the hard drive (see Hard Drive).

Turning Off Your Computer
CAUTION: To avoid losing data, save and close all open files and exit all open programs before you turn off your computer.
1. Shut down the operating system:
???In Windows Vista??:
Click Start , then click the arrow in the
???In Windows?? XP:
Click Start ??? Turn Off Computer ??? Turn Off.
The computer turns off after the operating system shutdown process is complete.
2.Ensure that the computer and all attached devices are turned off. If your computer and attached devices did not automatically turn off when you shut down your operating system, press and hold the power button for about 6 seconds to turn them off.
After Working Inside Your Computer
After you complete any replacement procedure, ensure you connect any external devices, cards, and cables before turning on your computer.
CAUTION: To avoid damage to the computer, use only the battery designed for this particular Dell computer. Do not use batteries designed for other Dell computers.
1. Connect any external devices, such as a port replicator, battery slice, or media base, and replace any cards, such as an ExpressCard.
CAUTION: To connect a network cable, first plug the cable into the network device and then plug it into the computer.
2.Connect any telephone or network cables to your computer.
3.Replace the battery.
4.Connect your computer and all attached devices to their electrical outlets.
5.Turn on your computer.
